From Pirate Remedy to Global Icon: The Story of the Mojito

Few cocktails are known to be as classic as the Mojito, earning a place on almost every menu. As one of the most popular spirited drinks across the globe, it is no surprise that they also have legendary origins, linking back to pirates in the 16th Century.

While the exact history of the Mojito is slightly muddled, it originated in Cuba when famous English explorer and privateer Sir Francis Drake planned to raid the flourishing city of Havana. While the invasion was unsuccessful, something great would come out of it and change history forever. Because his crew was suffering from scurvy, his ship pulled ashore in Cuba, and they began to search for a cure. The sickly soldiers were given a remedy in the form of lime juice, mint, sugar, and aguardiente.

Following this, the drink was dubbed “El Draque” after his crew were miraculously cured of their ailments. Whether Sir Francis Drake’s greatest legacy is his historic circumnavigation of the globe or the creation of Mojitos is for you to decide!

Flash-forward to today, Mojitos have evolved from a medicinal drink to a staple cocktail. Rum production began to thrive in Cuba in the 1800s, and it became a replacement for aguardiente in the original El Draque recipe. This allowed for the cocktail to transition to the recipe that is known and loved today, and earn the name “Mojito.” The name is believed to be derived from “mojo,” which is a Caribbean sauce made of lemon and garlic. However, some believe the name comes from the voodoo world, where the word “mojo” means spell.

The rise in popularity of the cocktail can additionally be attributed to American novelist Ernest Hemingway. The author lived in Cuba for nearly 20 years, as he saw it as an ideal and inspiring climate for writing. During his time in the country, he developed a strong affinity for Mojitos, which helped popularize the cocktail among tourists in Havana and allowed for the recipe to spread beyond the Caribbean.

From the streets of Havana to modern-day beach clubs, Mojitos have earned a lively and vibrant reputation. The drink is extremely versatile and works brilliantly at any social gathering, especially those that are upbeat in warm weather. As the mint and lime work together to create a refreshing profile, it is an optimal choice at an outdoor event when the humid weather calls for a cool-down. Whether you are lying by the pool or at a backyard barbeque with friends, Mojitos are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.
